It’s been a while since I’ve done a Stupidfreude, but some things impel recreational scorn. Like a fan video I came across just now.
It’s Battlestar Galactica meets Kenny Loggins’ “Highway to the Danger Zone,” from Top Gun.
This video makes me question my taste, nay, my very ethical system. I basically hate every single thing about Top Gun and would eliminate the movie from the space-time continuum if it were possible. So maybe it’s wrong for me to be all “YEAH!” during the space battles on BSG, since it’s basically the same military-playtime feeling.
Naaaah. Actually, the two present quite a tidy illustration of the contrast between the heedlessly arrogant 80s and the sober world of post-9/11. Remember, in Top Gun they dreamed up a pointless — yet uncannily tidy — military conflict just so the guys would be able to revel in heroism and buddy-love. Grenada, anyone? Now, if BSG would just do a subplot reminiscent of the Iraq war…
Anyway, this video is worth checking out if you’re in the mood to hate. For one thing, when Kenny sings, “The further on the edge, the hotter the intensity,” as he sings “intensity” this “cool” voice whispers the same word. You can just imagine the production savant who dreamed up that little touch.
Second, it’s a bad video! The shots are totally random. Not that it would be any better, cosmically speaking, if it were a well-made video. I guess it’s basically giving Kenny what he deserves.
If you’re still in that Top Gun mood, here’s another fan vid that’s actually a little bit good, despite the fact that it’s set to “The Top Gun Anthem.” It uses great shots from that ep where Starbuck masterminds the sneak attack on the base. The song has a splendid 80s bridge, complete with guitars going chuka-chuk-CHUK and Roaaaaowr!, at -1:40 (or 2:45).
