How ’bout that ouroboros, eh? Man, that thing is everywhere in fan culture.
It even unites all the different — and frequently hostile — types of fans I talk about on this blog.
It turns up on the X-Files, Millennium (remember that show?), Lost and Red Dwarf (remember THAT show?). It was featured on the anime series Fullmetal Alchemist and Noein. Authors including Robert Heinlein, Michael Ende, E. R. Eddison, Robert Jordan, Charles Sheffield and Kurt Vonnegut have referenced it. (See? Right there you’ve got a bridge between fantasy, “genre” sci-fi and “literary” sci-fi.) TSR has a (butt ugly) miniature.
Prog rockers The Alan Parsons Project and Neil Peart have been drawn to it. (No, really?) There are 18,000 users of forums, MySpace, Facebook etc. with ourobouros avatars in the U.S. alone. OK, I made that up.
I couldn’t find any comic books that use it, but hey, this blog grossly neglects comics anyway.
I started thinking about ouroboros today when I learned of the existence of the Armadillo lizard. Isn’t it unbelievable? I’m kvelling.
