“There are always topics on which otherwise scrupulous minds will cave in with scarcely a struggle to the grossest prejudice. “
–Terry Eagleton on Richard Dawkins
Yesterday I realized the reason I stopped watching the anime Rahxephon, a hi-brow re-imagining of the giant robot genre with a stylish look and great music, was because I hated the heroine’s outfit.
Which I think is OK. It’s always nice when you can find amusement in your own foibles. And this foible isn’t *that* ridiculous, actually — are you ready for this?
–Capri pants
–No, actually they’re leggings – Capri leggings!
–Low-heeled pumps
–A short-sleeved jacket
–A *headband.* The stretchy kind you use to hold your hair back when you wash your face.
Nightmare, sweetie. Plus she’s one of these fresh-scrubbed vigorous types, like you can imagine her captaining a softball team — no surprise there — but there’s this astral projection/ghost popping up every now and then who is suitably ethereal and wears a very nice yellow dress, and *she* turns out to be the embodiment of Ms. Capri Pants’ soul, and I am not *having* it.
Or maybe I am. That ol’ anime fetish is upon me again, and, well, see the quote above.
P.S. The Eagleton article on Dawkins is just fabulous, by the way. Loads of zingers.
